About Art Rogue and Matt Mikulla the Artist
Howdy there!
I am Matt Mikulla, an independent artist and Photographer. Art Rogue is a place where you can view and purchase my fine artwork.
What is an independent artist? Well, to me it means that I am not bound by contract or agreement with any art gallery or dealer. I make my own rules and as a result my work is less restricted and more affordable to you the collector.
I began to pursue the study of fine art at an early age. My family has always been in the picture framing business. I eventually made my way out west from Columbus Ohio to attend the University of Montana. I received a degree in studio fine arts focusing on ceramics and photography as well as a minor in Media Arts. If there was a degree for hiking, snowboarding, and partying I would have graduated with honors.
Throughout high school and college I worked at any art related job I could get. I was an artist assistant, Art Supply Store Chump, Professional Picture Framer, and Gallery Assistant. I was also known as an excellent bar bouncer.
Back in 2006 I was employed by a fine art gallery in Nashville. My situation became very unhappy and restless. It was probably the entrepreneur in me and I had always told myself that I would work as a professional artist under my own terms. It was then I defected and launched Art Rogue.
Art Rogue began as my studio and gallery located in the historic Arcade Building in Downtown Nashville. Among other art galleries and artists I helped launch the wildly successful First Saturday Gallery Crawl.
I eventually closed up the public Art Rogue space and I now work out my studio in Austin Texas.
Throughout the years my work has been collected by corporations, small businesses, hotels, universities, and super cool people like you. I consider all to be my friends. In fact, we should be friends.
